Part of the Amazing Sports series
From baseball fields to volleyball courts, some of the most popular sports can be experienced worldwide. Appealing to sports enthusiasts and young participants, this series introduces the basic gameplay of six Amazing Sports. Detailed photos and straightforward text examine the featured sport’s history, equipment, primary positions, and common rules. Each book also includes a biographical story about a famous player who influenced the sport.
Readers are served tennis basics in this introductory volume of the "Amazing Sports" series (6 titles). Its five chapters, each about four pages long, offer succinct descriptions of the sport’s history, equipment, game structure, player positions, and major competitions and organizations. A crisp, full-page photo of a player (or players) in action fills one side of every spread, accompanied by a tennis-fact caption. The main text supports newly independent readers with its large font size, roomy line spacing, and considerable white space. Occasionally, the chapters’ brevity causes confusion: the game-set-match structure could have benefited from another sentence or two, and a diagram of the court would have been useful. Nevertheless, readers will learn some tennis terms and grasp the game’s fundamentals. A brief profile of the Williams sisters brings this title to a close.
